Chapter 4 – Structure of Atom

The structure of an atom explains how an atom is made up of smaller particles called protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons and neutrons are present in the nucleus (center of the atom), while electrons move around the nucleus in different energy levels or shells. Scientists like J.J. Thomson, Rutherford, and Bohr proposed different atomic models to explain how atoms are arranged. Understanding the structure of atoms helps us know how elements behave and form chemical reactions and bonds.

  • Atom is the smallest unit of an element.
  • It contains protons, neutrons, and electrons.
  • Protons and neutrons are in the nucleus (center).
  • Electrons move around the nucleus in shells.
  • The structure of an atom helps us understand chemical reactions.
